Contaminated foods and drinks are common sources of infection. Among the more common infections that one can get from contaminated foods and drinks are typhoid fever Escherichia coli infections, shigellosis or bacillary dysentery, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, other salmonelloses, cholera, rotavirus infections, also a variety of worm infestations. Many of the infectious diseases transmitted in food and water can also be acquired directly through the faecal-oral route.
Food adulteration
Food adulteration is the act of intentionally debasing the quality of food offered for sale either by the admixture or substitution of inferior substances or by the removal of some valuable ingredient. Food is declared adulterated if:
* a substance is added which depreciates or injuriously affects it
* cheaper or inferior substances are substituted wholly or in part
* any valuable or necessary constituent has been wholly or in part abstracted
* it is an imitation
* it is coloured or otherwise treated, to improve its appearance or if it contains any added substance injurious to health
Food-preservatives have a very extensive use, which often constitutes adulteration. Salt is the classic preservative, but is seldom classified as an adulterant. Salicylic, benzoic, and boric acids, and their sodium salts, formaldehyde, ammonium fluoride, sulphurous acid and its salts are among the principal preservatives. Many of these appear to be innocuous, but there is danger that the continued use of food preserved by these agents may be injurious. Some preservatives have been conclusively shown to be injurious when used for long periods.
Coal-tar colours are employed a great deal, pickles and canned vegetables are sometimes coloured green with copper salts; butter is made more yellow by anatta; turmeric is used in mustard and some cereal preparations. Apples are the basis for many jellies, which are coloured so as to simulate finer ones.
In confectionery, dangerous colours, such as chrome yellow, prussian blue, copper and arsenic compounds are employed. Yellow and orange-coloured sweets are to be suspected. Artificial flavouring compounds are employed in the concoction of fruit syrups, especially those used for soda water. Milk is adulterated with water, and indirectly by removing the cream.
The addition of water may introduce disease germs. Cream is adulterated with gelatin, and formaldehyde is employed as a preservative for it. Butter is adulterated to an enormous extent with oleomargarine, a product of beef fat. Brick dust in chilli powder, coloured chalk powder in turmeric, injectable dyes in watermelon, peas, capsicum, brinjal, papaya seeds in black pepper etc.
To avoid illness, one is advised to select foods with care. All raw foods must be checked for contamination particularly in areas where hygiene and sanitation are inadequate. One is advised to avoid salads, uncooked vegetables, and unpasteurised milk and milk products such as cheese, and to eat only food that has been cooked and is still hot.
Undercooked and raw meat, fish, and shellfish can carry various intestinal pathogens. Cooked food that has been allowed to stand for several hours at ambient temperature can provide a fertile medium for bacterial growth and should be thoroughly reheated before serving. Consumption of food and beverages obtained from street food vendors has been associated with an increased risk of illness.

What is breast cancer? What is the treatment of breast cancer?
/

Checked by : Dr N Ananthakrishnan, Head of Department of Surgery, JIPMER, Pondicherry
Breast cancer is the uncontrolled malignant growth of cells in the breast tissue. There are many types of breast cancers, those that form in the milk
glands, in the ducts that carry milk, in the fatty area or in the connective tissue of the breast.
Cancer of the milk ducts is the most commonly occurring form of breast cancer. Usually only one breast is affected. There is a rare type of breast cancer in which the breast becomes red and swollen and resembles infection of the breast.
What is the treatment of breast cancer?
Since the breast is not an organ that is necessary for survival, it is generally removed by a surgical procedure called mastectomy. In some cases only the lump is removed, in others the whole breast is removed.
Later, the patient may be given radiotherapy. This procedure helps to destroy the cancerous cells without harming the neighbouring tissue. If the cancer has spread to other parts of the body as well, chemotherapy using drugs like vincritine, adriamycin and cyclophosphamide is done. In some cases, hormonal treatment using tamoxifen is advised. Usually a combination of all of these procedures is followed for complete treatment. In most cases, if the cancer is detected early and treated appropriately, breast cancer patients can usually lead a cancer free life.

12 Tips to prevent eye infection?

An eye infection is usually caused by bacteria or a virus. Eye infections include styes, conjunctivitis, trachoma etc. and can occur in any age group.
Eye care for computer users
If are into a job that requires working on computers for long hours, do take off your eyes from computer at regular intervals and have an anti-glare screen set on your computer.
While working for long hours, look at distant objects either in your office or outside. Looking at a distant object and then returning to your task helps your eyes focus better. Try taking such visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour.
Have separate towels
Ensure that each member of your family has separate towels. Eye infections like trachoma and conjunctivitis are transmitted through common towels and handkerchiefs.
Don't share eye make-up
Do not share your eye makeup kit and do not use eye makeup until the infection is fully cured. Sharing makeup means you are also sharing bacteria and thus giving an open invitation to eye infections.
Take antibiotics with prescription
If you are taking medicines or antibiotics to manage other health problems, take it with doctor's prescription because some medicines might cause eye infection.
Wash your eyes frequently
Wash your eyes and eyelids with an eye scrub and fresh water properly. If washing it with a eye scrub is not possible, at least wash your eyes with fresh water at frequent intervals right through the day. Dirty eyelids can lead to an eye infection.

The most important benefit of yoga is physical and mental therapy. The aging process, which is largely an artificial condition, caused mainly by autointoxication or self-poisoning, can be slowed down by practicing yoga. By keeping the body clean, flexible and well lubricated, we can significantly reduce the catabolic process of cell deterioration. To get the maximum benefits of yoga one has to combine the practices of yogasanas, pranayama and meditation.
Regular practice of asanas, pranayama and meditation can help such diverse ailments such as diabetes, blood pressure, digestive disorders, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, asthma, varicose veins and heart conditions. Laboratory tests have proved the yogi`s increased abilities of consciously controlling autonomic or involuntary functions, such as temperature, heartbeat and blood pressure. Research into the effects of yogic practices on HIV is currently underway with promising results.
According to medical scientists, yoga therapy is successful because of the balance created in the nervous and endocrine systems which directly influences all the other systems and organs of the body.
Yoga acts both as a curative and preventive therapy. The very essence of yoga lies in attaining mental peace, improved concentration powers, a relaxed state of living and harmony in relationships.
Through the practice of yoga, we become aware of the interconnectedness between our emotional, mental and physical levels. Gradually this awareness leads to an understanding of the more subtle areas of existence.
The ultimate goal of yoga is to make it possible for you to be able to fuse together the gross material (annamaya), physical (pranamaya), mental (manomaya), intellectual (vijnanamaya) and spiritual (anandamaya) levels within your being.
Physiological Benefits
Physicians and scientists are discovering brand new health benefits of yoga everyday. Studies show it can relieve the symptoms of several common and potentially life-threatening illnesses such as arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, AIDS, asthma and obesity.
Asthma
Studies conducted at yoga institutions in India have reported impressive success in improving asthma. It has also been proved that asthma attacks can usually be prevented by yoga methods without resorting to drugs.
Physicians have found that the addition of improved concentration abilities and yogic meditation together with the practice of simple postures and pranayama makes treatment more effective.
Yoga practice also results in greater reduction in anxiety scores than drug therapy. Doctors believe that yoga practice helps patients by enabling them to gain access to their own internal experience and increased self-awareness.

Forever young - how to slow the aging process

A team of nutritional researchers from southern California have completed a five year study that shows people who consume more antioxidants appear to age at a 47 percent slower rate than those who don't.
"Antioxidants slow the rate at which cells divide," says nutrition expert and director of Allmera Nutraceuticals Ron Slavick. "The faster your cells divide due to diet, stress or pollution, the faster you will age."
This is why Slavick has kept his team focused on a product called Proleva. Proleva is a capsule formulated by a team of scientists in Seattle, Washington, that you take once a day to give your body the extra antioxidants you need to restore your health, vitality and youthful appearance.
A single dose of Proleva contains the antioxidants found in eight of the most powerful superfruits, antioxidants that have been shown to increase eyesight, improve your immune system, support your cardiovascular health, boost short-term memory, increase brain function and return the youthful glow to your skin and hair.
After 2 to 3 months, nearly all Proleva customers report more energy, healthier-looking skin, deeper sleep, less sick time and better short-term memory. The reason is believed to be that their body is finally getting the antioxidants they need to balance the effects of poor diet, stress and pollution.
